PROFILE

The Singapore Heritage Society promotes a wider interest in Singapore’s cultural heritage and history. It operates as a non-profit, non-government organisation and is a registered charity.

HISTORY
On 12 March 1987, a pro-tem committee of fifteen people formally established the Society. Right from the start, there was a great diversity in its members, interests and activities.

The Society has always been active in publishing quality yet accessible books on local heritage. Wider audiences were also engaged through activities such as talks, forums, tours and exhibitions. The Society has also become a key voice in heritage-related national debates. In particular, it is known for its advocacy of the conservation of heritage buildings and places.

Even as it builds on its strengths, the Society is exploring new ways of making history interesting to wider audiences, such as through the development of its online Peoples’ Encyclopaedia of Singapore History.

LOGO
The tree is a traditional symbol of like, knowledge and wisdom. Just as it draws nourishment from the earth through a complex system of roots in order to flourish, so does the nation sustain itself and grow through the strength of its historical and cultural foundations. The dots suggest the breadth of the Society’s concerns, including the built and natural environments, the arts and humanities, lifestyles and popular culture.
