The National Library Board is the the depository of all materials published in Singapore. It aims to promote a knowledgeable civic society and through its Lee Kong Chian Reference Library, provides individuals and organisations with access to this deposited material as well as current and retrospective materials written on Singapore but published elsewhere. We collect in all languages, editions, and formats, including translated works in order to build an exhaustive collection of the nation's literary heritage.

As Singapore is closely linked to the rest of Southeast Asia geographically, politically and economically, it is logical to house materials on and about Southeast Asian countries together with the Singapore Collection. This goes well with the vision of the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library as the library for people who are seeking information on Singapore, Southeast Asia and Asia.
