Ong Teng Cheong (1936-2002) was an architect, planner, politician and from 1993-99 President of Singapore. This attractively illustrated account of Mr Ong's life and achievements includes information about his childhood, education at Chinese High, and early friendship with Ling Siew May who became his ever-supportive wife. After studying architecture in Adelaide he returned to the Planning Department and was later in private practice. Mr Ong's 1972 entry into politics and subsequent service to the Trade Union movement, to the development of the MRT and the airport are discussed. The values, which underpinned Mr Ong’s achievements and his roles and activities as Singapore’s first elected President, are described and discussed.
